Tee’s transformation through dance

Newsletter June 2024

Welcome to the new Sport for Development newsletter!

We are very excited to share deeper insights into the global impact we’re making through our Sport for Development program.

From creating safe spaces for children to fostering leadership skills, our initiatives are transforming communities around the world. In this edition, we highlight the story of an inspiring young woman from Nairobi, whose journey exemplifies the power of sports, to change not only her own life, but also the futures of others.

Introduction to Sport for Development

Sport for Development empowers youth to create lasting change in their communities through the power of sports and play. This program, funded by the Dutch government, is a powerful initiative aimed at contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and cultivating meaningful youth engagement and social impact on a global scale.

For over 20 years, the program supports a world where children and young adults actively contribute to vital communities. This not only promotes healthier lifestyles through sports and play, but also improves access to formal and informal education, gender equality, women's participation, employability and entrepreneurship. Sport for Development creates safe spaces for youth to explore and embrace their authentic selves.

The program is implemented in six different regions worldwide through a powerful partnership between the International Sports Alliance (ISA), Right To Play (RTP), the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), and the Royal Dutch Hockey Federation (KNHB). Together, these partners form a solid collaboration and use sports as an impactful means to promote social change, well-being, education, equality, peace and employment.

Sport and Empoyability

Sports can significantly enhance employability by developing skills and providing valuable experiences are highly valued in the workplace.

The SFD consortium has successfully used sports to boost youth employability by teaching leadership, discipline, teamwork, empathy, and self-esteem, encouraging entrepreneurial initiatives, creating direct and indirect job opportunities, and providing practical, workplace-transferable experiences.

By integrating sports into employability programs, the consortium has empowered youth with the skills and opportunities needed to succeed in their professional lives.

Tee's transformation through dance

Kibera, the largest slum in Nairobi, Kenya, is a place where families face numerous challenges, including extreme poverty, unsafe environments, limited access to basic sanitation or clean water and a lack of educational and economic opportunities. Despite this suffering, Kibera is home to a resilient and vibrant population, determined to build a better future. One of them is Mary Atieno (Tee).

Growing up in a family of five children, the financial stress of school fees often forced her to drop out. Despite these obstacles, she completed her primary and high school and even earned a university degree. Her father's promise that she could start dancing professionally after finishing high school, fueled her determination. Eager to chase her dreams, Tee joined neighborhood dance crews and looked for opportunities to follow her passion.

Despite the challenging and corrupt job market in Kenya, Tee began her journey as a dance coach with CHEZA CHEZA 5 years ago. Thanks to ISA’s Change and Game Changers training, she discovered her purpose wasn't just about personal transformation but making a significant difference for the children in Kenya. Her confidence increased as she learned to share her own stories, connecting with people around her and positively impacting countless young lives.
After starting her own dance class, Tee faced different challenges and setbacks. But she reflected on what she learned during the ISA training and realized that she had the power to create her own opportunities. Today, her dance classes are making a positive impact on the lives of countless young people. She often has 25 to 30 kids in her classes, not only teaching them to dance but also giving important life lessons. Many of her students have moved on to better opportunities, showcasing the value of the skills they gain.

“It’s not just about dancing, we explore the opportunities of young kids and help them reaching their full potential. We talk about the challenges they go through; we talk them out of drugs, pregnancies and crime. Because I tell them, how I did it.’

Tee’s story is a bright example of the possibilities that can emerge when passion, dedication and empowerment come together. The impact Tee now has on her environment is proof that with the right programs, young minds can take back the power of their own future. Together, we are creating a brighter future for the next generation through the power of sport.
"I learned to be a changemaker, i strive to positively impact my community and the children within it. If I was impacted, imagine the difference I can make for them."
