Introduction to Sport for Development

Sport for Development empowers youth to create lasting change in their communities through the power of sports and play. This program, funded by the Dutch government, is a powerful initiative aimed at contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and cultivating meaningful youth engagement and social impact on a global scale.
For over 20 years, the program supports a world where children and young adults actively contribute to vital communities. This not only promotes healthier lifestyles through sports and play, but also improves access to formal and informal education, gender equality, women's participation, employability and entrepreneurship. Sport for Development creates safe spaces for youth to explore and embrace their authentic selves. |
The program is implemented in six different regions worldwide through a powerful partnership between the International Sports Alliance (ISA), Right To Play (RTP), the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), and the Royal Dutch Hockey Federation (KNHB). Together, these partners form a solid collaboration and use sports as an impactful means to promote social change, well-being, education, equality, peace and employment. |

Sport and Gender Equality
Sports play a crucial role in advancing gender equality. By empowering women and girls, we're challenging stereotypes and providing new opportunities for leadership and growth. The Sport for Development program has effectively utilized sports to promote gender equality by boosting confidence, leadership, and resilience among women and girls, creating inclusive environments and breaking down gender barriers. Many young girls grow into confident individuals who can influence others positively, inspiring future generations.

The KNVB WorldCoaches program harnesses the power of football to improve the lives of children in low- and middle-income countries. Drawing on the KNVB's extensive international coaching and training experience, WorldCoaches believe football can drive social development everywhere. The program trains young people to become football coaches and community role models, focusing on personal development, health, and social cohesion—key themes aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Since 1997, WorldCoaches has trained over 18,000 coaches, reaching more than 580,000 children. By creating safe spaces and providing life skills training, WorldCoaches inspires and guides youth to become the changemakers of tomorrow.

Ketrin's ball to empowering women
|

Growing up in Indonesia, Ketrin faced significant challenges due to the cultural norms of her community, where female opinions were often ignored, their roles limited to staying at home and taking care of the family, with no opportunities to pursue their own dreams. This environment affected Ketrin’s confidence and vision for her future.
"I always doubted myself, it was difficult for me to give a strong opinion. I had no dreams and no vision for my life"
Ignited by playing with her brothers, Ketrin found happiness in football. After completing her university in 2016, she encountered a female football team of Inspire Indonesia. This discovery was life-changing. "I was shocked to know there was a school football team for women. Her journey expanded with the WorldCoaches program in 2019. This program, developed by KNVB, focuses not only on football skills but also on life coaching. "Every single thing I did, my coach watched me and told me I was making an influence. That encouragement really changed my life," Ketrin says.
This experience transformed Ketrin from a player into a life coach. As a coach, Ketrin has made a profound impact on her community. She coaches girls of various age groups, teaching them football and important life skills such as self-awareness, teamwork, and persistence. Through her coaching, she has seen many young girls grow into confident individuals who can influence others positively. One of her players, Roro, who used to feel insignificant growing up in a family of nine and was afraid to speak up, has now become a coach herself, already impacting the lives of more than 30 girls. "Roro’s transformation is a testament to empowerment," Ketrin proudly states.

Ketrin's biggest dream is to inspire people all over the world. One step closer to this dream was her speaking at a United Nations event in Baku, Azerbaijan, where she spoke about her commitment to advocating for gender equality and women's empowerment.
"It's important to talk about gender equality and how men should respect women so we can grow and get opportunities"
Ketrin’s future goals are centered around seeing more women become coaches and leaders in their communities. She hopes to continue her work with WorldCoaches, helping young girls realize their potential and achieve their dreams. Through the support of programs like WorldCoaches, she has not only changed her own life but also the lives of countless young girls in her community. As she continues to inspire and empower others, Ketrin embodies the essence of a true changemaker.
