Driving sustainable impact: the Youth Fund's multifaceted approach

Newsletter January 2025

Welcome to the January edition of the Sport for Development newsletter.

We’re kicking off the year by highlighting the Youth Fund, a program empowering young people to lead and innovate. By funding local ideas from within communities, the fund fosters lasting impact covering multiple Sustainable Development Goals. This edition features two inspiring success stories that perfectly illustrate the direct and indirect impact of growth within communities.

Together, let’s continue creating opportunities and driving positive change in 2025!

The Youth Fund, a key initiative of the SfD program, empowers young people to design and implement projects that address specific challenges in their communities.

Facilitators promote the initiative through community outreach, discussions with local coaches and social media campaigns, ensuring wide awareness and participation. The setup and procedures are collaboratively designed to reflect local contexts. Proposals can be submitted in two formats: written descriptions or vocal recordings, ensuring accessibility for all participants. Projects are elevated based on relevance, inclusivity, local contributions, participation of girls and sustainability.

The Youth Fund has successfully financed diverse projects addressing crucial community needs. These projects have created ripple effects, inspiring other young people and fostering social cohesion. For example, one initiative led to over 70% increased school attendance among girls due to improved hygiene facilities.

"The Youth Fund allowed us to make real changes in our community. It gave us the confidence to lead and inspire others."

Enabling Youth-Led solutions for Global Goals

The Impact Fund has been instrumental in empowering local communities. One such initiative is the construction of sanitary facilities for girls in a rural school, a project that embodies the spirit of the program.

Many schools lack basic amenities for girls, which leads to higher dropout rates and a loss of educational opportunities.” shares one of the hockey coaches involved in the project.

Through the Youth fund, young coaches came together to identify critical issues in their community: the lack of separate toilets for girls. With guidance from the SfD program, they collaboratively developed a proposal to construct two sanitary facilities designed specifically for girls.

The coaches learned invaluable skills through the grant process, including project planning, budgeting and presentation skills. Working together, they mobilized resources and involved local stakeholders. The school principal remarks:

“The hockey coaches didn’t just help construct toilets; they helped construct a better future for our community.”

The success of the project has sparked broader community engagement. Inspired by the coaches’ efforts, parents have started building toilets in their own homes, creating a ripple effect of improved hygiene and health standards.
Another inspiring example comes from the Youth Fund in Mali. Out of 32 innovative proposals presented by young leaders, 8 were selected and funded by ISA E.A facilitators, directly benefiting over 2,000 young people and community members.

One standout initiative was a festival that highlighted the power of sports as a tool for education and development. “The Youth Fund allowed us to take ownership of the change we want to see in our communities” one participant reflected.

The festival celebrated inclusivity and teamwork while fostering stronger collaboration among local sports organizations, schools and community groups. The ripple effect of the Youth Fund continues, as coaches refine their strategies for future events and foster new partnerships that enhance development.

These initiatives serves as a model for the Impact Fund’s potential, demonstrating how small investments can drive transformative change. By fostering collaboration, leadership and community-driven solutions, the Youth Fund aligns with global goals such as Gender Equality (SDG 5) and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11).

As the impact grows, the coaches are prepared to tackle upcoming challenges, demonstrating how small actions can create significant transformations.

Connecting SDGs, empowering communities

The Impact Fund is driving sustainable change by connecting multiple SDGs, including Quality Education (SDG 4), Gender Equality (SDG 5), and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11). Through targeted projects like building sanitary facilities for girls and fostering employment opportunities through sports initiatives, the fund empowers communities to tackle pressing challenges.

The initiatives inspire collective progress, proving that small investments can lead to transformative results. This approach exemplifies how innovative funding lifts up local communities.

Sport for Development Program

Sport for Development empowers youth to create lasting change in their communities through the power of sports and play. This program, funded by the Dutch government, is a powerful initiative aimed at contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and cultivating meaningful youth engagement and social impact on a global scale.

For over 20 years, the program supports a world where children and young adults actively contribute to vital communities. This not only promotes healthier lifestyles through sports and play, but also improves access to formal and informal education, gender equality, women's participation, employability and entrepreneurship. Sport for Development creates safe spaces for youth to explore and embrace their authentic selves.

The program is implemented in six different regions worldwide through a powerful partnership between the International Sports Alliance (ISA), Right To Play (RTP), the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), and the Royal Dutch Hockey Federation (KNHB). Together, these partners form a solid collaboration and use sports as an impactful means to promote social change, well-being, education, equality, peace and employment.
